Different Types of Meterboxes - Gas, Electrical & Commercial
Choosing the right meter box is essential for protecting your energy supply, meeting UK standards, and keeping your installation weatherproof and secure. At MeterBoxesDirect, we supply all different types of meterboxes — from gas and electric to commercial kiosks— so you can find exactly what you need, all in one place.
What is a MeterBox?
A meter box is an outdoor or indoor enclosure designed to safely house gas, water or electrical meters. A good meter box protects your meter from damage, keeps connections secure, and helps prevent water or dust from getting inside — which is where Ingress Protection (IP) ratings come in. Different types of meterboxes exist because different utilities have unique safety, size, and compliance needs.
Different Types of Meterboxes We Offer
Gas Meter Boxes
Our GRP gas meter boxes are manufactured to meet British Standard BS 8499:2009, ensuring they’re safe and compliant for domestic and commercial use. Gas meter boxes are typically surface-mounted or recessed and come with hinges, locks, and keys. They’re fire retardant and designed to keep your gas meter secure and protected against the weather and accidental damage.
Electrical Meter Boxes
We supply electric meter boxes built to the ESI Standard 13-3 April 1986 and BS 8567:2012. These electric meter boxes come with hinges, locks, keys, and specification sheets. Made from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), they’re robust, weather-resistant and fire retardant — perfect for UK conditions. Electric meter boxes are used to house a wide range of installations, including switchgear, telecoms, EV charging stations and more. Whether you need a box for a small domestic meter or a larger commercial connection, we have you covered.
Commercial Meter Boxes & Kiosks
Our commercial meter boxes, or kiosks, are heavy-duty enclosures designed for more demanding installations. They’re built with specific Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, like IP43 or IP55, to prevent dust and water from getting inside. Common uses include housing control gear, water pumps, compressors, multi-metering setups, and electric vehicle charging equipment. Made from GRP, they’re corrosion-resistant, weatherproof, and can be mounted on poles, plinths or pedestals. All come with locks, keys, hinges and clear instructions — whether pre-assembled or flat-packed.
How to Choose the Right Meterbox
When comparing different types of meterboxes, think about:
- Location: Indoor or outdoor? Exposed to weather?
- Ingress Protection: Choose the right IP rating (IP43, IP44, IP55) to keep dust and water out.
- Size & Material: Measure your meter, cables, and space. GRP is lightweight, durable and fire retardant — perfect for harsh weather.
- Security: Hinges, locks and keys protect your installation from tampering or damage.
- Installations: Most of our Electric and Gas meter boxes are installed recessed, semi-submerged or surface mounted
