IP Rating Explained | What is Ip Rating and How it Works

IP Rating Explained

IP Rating is the acronym for Ingress Protection. These letters are followed by two-digit numbers that determine its grading. This rating system is defined by the international standard EN 60529. An IP Rating applies to electrical items and defines the level of protection and resistance to different types of unwanted intrusions — from mechanical or electrical parts, to dust and moisture.

Why the IP Rating System?

This global system is standardised across most regions, including the UK, where the IP Rating complies with British Standard BS EN 60529:1992 and European Standard IEC 60509:1989. It enables users to select the appropriate level of enclosure protection for specific applications, ensuring safety and durability.

IP Rating Explanation

the IP Rating comprises two digits:

  • The first digit (0-6) indicates protection against solids like dust.
  • The second digit (0-9) indicates moisture protection, tested under different exposure conditions like sprays or submersion.

Occasionally, additional letters like 'M' or 'X' are added to indicate special resistance properties, such as oil resistance.

Understanding IP Ratings in Detail

  • IP43 provides protection against solid objects >1mm and water spray up to 60° from vertical.
  • IP55 protects against dust ingress (limited) and low-pressure water jets.
  • IP65 offers complete dust-tight protection and resistance to water projected from a nozzle.
  • Use this IP Rating guide to determine the correct meter box or electrical enclosure based on your environment and application.

    IP Testing at MeterBoxesDirect

All IP-rated meter boxes and enclosures from MeterBoxesDirect undergo rigorous IP testing. For instance, you can view our IP44 water ingress test video online, showing how we ensure the enclosures meet safety standards.

    Our IP-Rated Product Ranges

We offer a wide range of IP Rating categories for various applications:

    • IP43 Electrical Kiosks - Suitable for outdoor installations requiring basic moisture and dust protection.
    • IP55 Cabinets - Ideal for environments with exposure to light jets of water.
