Repair My Gas Meter Box

Who is responsible for repairing the gas meter box?

Across the U.K., a meter gas box falls under the Gas Act 1986. Historically, gas and electric boards owned meter boxes and were responsible for maintenance, but since the deregulation of the energy sector, your damaged meter box is no longer their responsibility. It is now the responsibility of the homeowner to repair or replace a damaged gas or electric meter box. You will be charged for any work your provider does to replace or repair your meter box.

The owner or occupier must maintain the meter box in social or shared housing. At Meter Boxes Direct, we can supply meter box covers, doors, hinges, and locks to assist in repairing or replacing your meter box.

Due to their placement outside, meter boxes can become damaged. Heavy rain, frost and high winds can damage the door, as well as vandalism and general wear and tear. Property owners are responsible for repair or replacement work on their meter boxes. There is a possibility that you do not need to replace the meter box entirely and that all you need to do is purchase a meter box repair kit.

Risks with a damaged Gas Meter box

The occupants of a property can be at risk of serious harm if the gas meter box is damaged. If a gas leak in the box migrates into the property, the box would be classified as "at-risk". Monoxide poisoning can result from gas leaks into a residence, which can cause severe illness or even death. If the box allows water ingress, the meter could also rust and leak, causing it to malfunction.

When maintaining your meter box, you must follow specific regulations. According to the 1998 Gas Safety Regulations, you should safeguard your meter box from damage and choose a suitable design. As per the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers, it is the consumer's responsibility to maintain their gas meter boxes. Property owners or suppliers can install gas meter boxes, and property owners are responsible for maintaining them once installed.
